Adhesive Lined Heat Shrink Electrical Butt Connectors:
A red butt heat shrink connector is a type of precision crimp connector commonly used in the profesional automotive garage. There are many different types of electrical crimp connectors to choose from. These red butt terminals are used to terminate wires in the range of 0.5 - 1.5 mm2 safely or to create safe and reliable connections between two wires. We offer a range of adhesive lined heat shrink butt connectors in different sizes - which are colour coded yellow, blue and red.
How to Connect Electrical Wires using a Heat Shrink Butt Connector:
[1] Ensure the Wire is Not Live
Check that there is no electrical current running through it.
[2] Determine the Correct Wire Gauge
Grab a wire stripping tool and hold the wire in one hand. Beginning with the largest hole check the size of the wire. Move progressively towards the lowest hole until you determine the correct gauge. Place the wire inside the appropriate hole and close the gap. You are looking for a hole size that fits tightly around the outside of the wire so that you struggle to move the wire yet it does not cut into the insulation.
[3] Cut the Wire Insulation
Now that the outside size of the wire has been determined move in about 3/8 inch from the wire end to be connected. Then place the stripping tool one size smaller than determined in the previous step onto the wire. Close and squeeze the handle so that the insulation is cut into. Record the number used on the stripping tool for later.
[4] Rotate the Stripping Tool and Slide Off the Wire Insulation
Rotate the tool about the wire to ensure it has cut cleanly all the way around the insulation. Slide it towards the outside of the wire to remove the plastic casing. The wire may present some resistance to this movement so it may take some effort. You may find that wrapping the wire around your other hand provides better grip to assist this process.
[5] Twist Wire Strands Together
At this point the internal multiple wire strands that are now exposed should be tidied together by twisting.
[6] Determine Correct Butt Connector Size
We previously determined the correct wire size and recorded it. It is now time to select an appropriate butt connector for this wire size - Yellow/ Blue/ Red.
[7] Insert stripped Wire end into Butt
Insert the newly stripped wire end halfway into the connector. At this point it is easily determined if the exposed wire segment is too long for the butt connector about to be used. If the exposed area is too long cut a little off the end using the stripping or crimping tool.
[8] Crimp using appropriate Crimp Tool
Using an appropriate wire crimping tool match the colour of the butt connector with the colour coded size gauges in the crimping tool. This colour coded system provides a fast and easy way to determine the correct indentation to be used. Securely hold the wire in the appropriate crimp position and squeeze firmly on the crimper handles. To effect a secure crimp a considerable anount of force may be required.
[9] Repeat Process for Wire on Other Side of Butt Connector
Repeat the above steps 3 through to step 7 for the wire to be connected on the other side of the butt connector.
[10] Check Connection Integrity
To check connection integrity gently pull the wires on both sides of the butt connector to ensure the connection is not loose and has been successfuly crimped. If the connection is loose, remove wires, dispose of the used connector and repeat the process using a new butt connector. These electrical connectors can only be used once.
[11] Seal Using Heat Shrink
Using a heat source, eg: heat gun, heat the heat shrink connector. This is a rapid process and typically takes about 5 seconds using a heat gun. The heat shrink seal will give a tight secure seal that will protect the electrical connection from the elements.
Butt Connector Electrical Applications:
The butt heat shrink connector is a very popular electrical connector frequently employed in automotive and workshop electrical jobs. It is a type of electrical crimp connector. Crimp connectors are used to terminate or connect wires securely and safely.
Wire cable is inserted into the connector and then a crimping action is applied using a crimping tool. The crimping action deforms the butt connector around the inserted wire providing a sound electrical contact. The crimping forces the inserted wire into a lasting physical contact with the metal conductor inside the butt connector.
The Heat Shrink Butt Connector is Quick & Easy to Use:
The other end can either be crimped to terminate the wire or the process can then be repeated on the opposite side of the butt with the adition of another another wire to create a secure electrical connection between the two wires.
The butt heat shrink connector is in its most simple form a cylindrical crimp connector with one crimp on each end. However these butt connectors are manufactured with adhesive lined Heat Shrinking ends which contract around the wire when exposed to heat. This provides a excellent protection from the environments to the electrical connection.
Advantages of Heat Shrink Butt Crimp Connectors:
Two common methods of wire connection exist - Crimp Connecting and Soldering. The heat shrink butt connector holds many key advantages over soldering.
- Butt connectors are very cheap and easy to use.
- Butt connections can be installed very quickly.
- Soldering equipment involves much longer set up times.
- Butt connectors are also safer than soldering equipment. They can be installed without extreme heat and the use of harmful toxins.
- Soldering involves the use of heavy and cumbersome equipment which can be difficult to use off site.
